On April 17, 2001, NY State Senator John R. Kuhl introduced Bill S4767 which would replace home education regulations S100.10. Senator Kuhl re-introduced this bill for the current session on January 9, 2002. It was overwhelmingly approved by the Senate Education Commitee on March 5, and reported to the Senate floor where it is waiting for a full Senate vote.
On May 8 2002, Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg introduced the bill in the Assembly, where it was given the designation A11364 and assigned to the Assembly Education Committee.
In February, 2003, these bills were re-introduced as S2060 and A4598 respectively. The information below, pertaining to S4767, is still valid and timely for S2060 / A4598.
On June 2, 2003, the NY Senate unanimously passed S2060. A4598 is still waiting for action in the Assembly Education Committee.
During the 2004, 2005, & 2006 Sessions, this bill remained tied in the Assembly Education Committee even thought there is considerable support in New York homeschooling communinity.
HSLDA is in support of the bill. After careful analysis and discussion, the LEAH Board also endorsed this bill and commended it to the membership for support. All homeschoolers are urged to contact the legislators and ask them to support S2060 / A4598, and the respective numberings of this bill in subsequent legislative sessions.
